Chapter 22:
In this quote, Aunt Alexandra and Atticus are fighting over whether Jem, Dill, and Scout should have been allowed into the courtroom. Aunt Alexandra thinks that Atticus was wrong in allowing them to stay during the trial. This is because she wants to protect them from the fowl language, but most of all from the unjust ruling of the jury. Aunt Alexandra thinks that the kids are too young to be seeing such discrimination. Atticus thinks however, that since they are being raised in Maycomb, the sooner they find out, the better. They should learn about how people discriminate against other races, so they can see how wrong it is.

Chapter 24
Tom ran to try to escape prison. He felt that Atticus could not set him free. He thought it was better to free himself. Tom also got tired of being patient. He did not want to wait for freedom. He did not want to be in prison for something he did not do. He also wanted to raise his children and live with his wife. All of these things probably raced through his mind verry quickly. Therefore, he decided to escape prison or at least die trying.

The death of Tom, relates to the killing of a mockingbird. Tom was killed for something that he did not do. He was an inocent man who just so happened to be black. Because of his skin color, he was discriminated by the prejudice people of Maycomb. He did not deserved to be killed because he didn't do anything wrong, he was just a regular man with a family and a life. That is the same thing for a mockingbird. A mockingbird does not do anything to anyone. They just live regular lifes, singing beautiful songs for people at no cost. So to kill a mockingbird would not be fair, just like the killing of Tom Robinson.

Zach - You make many valid points. I agree with you when you say that Aunt Alexandra wants to protect the children from the foul language and the corruption in the jury. If you were in her place, do you think you would feel the same way? Or would you be more like Atticus?

Nick G. - Great response. Do you also think that Tom lacked confidence in the juries of Southern America? Why was it so hard for a black man to be deemed innocent in southern America at that time?

Allie C. - Well stated. You're correllations between Tom and and mockingbird are spot on. Do you think issues like this persist in today's society?
