Chapter 11- I think that Jem was thinking that if he would have given Mrs. Dubose a chance and had an open mind about her attitude, maybe she would have been kinder, as displayed through the gift that she gave him. I think that Jem learned that if you walk in someone’s shoes and think about their side in the situation, maybe you will be more accepting of them.

Well put! That whole experience changed him. It is very hard to be the better person in that situation.
